Protected Learning Afternoons 2019

The next West Kent CCG Protected Learning Time afternoons will be detailed here soon.  All practices in the area will be closed.  The Surgery will close from from 1.00 p.m.  and the front doors to the surgery will be locked.  Please plan the ordering and collection of your repeat prescriptions to fall outside of this time.  If you require clinical assistance during that time please telephone NHS 111.  If you require urgent assistance please dial 999.

Online Services

We are now able to register patients for access our Online Services for booking routine appointments with the Doctors and ordering routine repeat prescriptions.  Please see the section for Online Services.  You will need to complete and return the registration form to the surgery and will then be issued with a user name and password.  This will allow you to access these services via a secure portal and our clinical system in line with Department of Health requirements.  Please DO NOT try to order repeat prescription via this website as it is not secure to do so.


Triage Service

Triage is a way of improving and streamlining your access to our services.


We run a daily triage system for patients who request an urgent same day appointment.  We have introduced this after a pilot scheme to help improve our patient access.  This means that if you request an urgent same day appointment or a home visit between 8.30 a.m. - 10.00 a.m., when demand for our services is at its highest, one of our clinicians/nurse practitioner will give your a brief call back.


After speaking to a GP or Nurse Practitioner you will decide together how best to address your needs that day:  you may be able to resolve the issues within the telephone call or you may be offered a face to face appointment with a GP, Nurse Practitioner, Practice Nurse or Health Care Assistant.


Such issues such as repeat Fit Notes and medication queries can easily be dealt with by telephone, freeing up appointments.


You will be asked by the receptionist for a brief outline of your problem.  This will help the clinciains prioritise their telephone calls.  Please ensure that the recepionist has your up to date home/work/mobile telephone numbers.  Please let the receptionist know if it is impossible for you to be rung back.


For routine appointments please ring after 10.00 a.m. as this will help us manage the demand on the telephone system for those who require same day appointments.


Please telephone for blood test and x-ray results after 3.00 p.m.  This will help relieve pressure on our telephone system when it is most busiest in the morning and give the GPs the opportunity to review and comment on results.






From January 2015 all GP Practice have been free to register patients who live outside of their practice boundaries.  This is a voluntary scheme.  Blackthorn Medical has chosen NOT to particpate in this scheme and will only register patients who live inside our agreed Practice Bounary.


PATIENT DNA'S (Did Not Attend)

Blackthorn is currently undertaking a project to look at the way our appointment system is offered.  One of the big problems that we have identified is the number of patients who do not turn up for their booked appointments and do not cancel them.  This prevents us from offering the appointments to other patients, lengthens the wait for routine appointments and cause frustration for us and for you. 


 Please remember to cancel your appointment if you find you no longer require it.


New Patient Registrations

Blackthorn Medical Centre is currently accepting new patients.


On occasion we may have periods where we do not accept new registrations due to capacity issues. We have a high workload and on occasion feel we do not have the resources to safely look after more patients. 


We do appreciate how frustrating it must be for you when you are trying to register with us and are unable to.  Unfortunately, we cannot accept everyone who would like to register and we may at times have put a limit on the number of patients that we feel we can safely look after.  This will be reviewed on a monthly basis.



All patients over the age of 65 and those over 6 months of age who are in an At Risk Group are entitled to receive a 'flu vaccine. Please call the surgery for more details

Shingles Vaccination - Patients Aged 70, 71, 72, 78 and 79


We will be calling those patients in who are eligible.


Shingles is a common, painful skin disease. Shingles can be very painful and uncomfortable.  Some people are left with pain long after the initial rash has healed.


If you wish to have the Shingles Vaccination and you are in the detailed age groups please make an appointment with our Practice Nurses to have this done.


Shingles vaccination is a single injection and you will only need to have this once.  Having the vaccination is expected to reduce your risk of getting shingles.  If you do get shingles you symptoms may be milder and the illness shorter.
